PALJASSAARE / TALLINN

Paljassaare history

Paljassaare was not always a peninsula. The Estonian Place Names Dictionary records that the area developed from two former islands, Suur and Väike Paljassaar, which were connected to the mainland by land filling in 1912–1917.

Two islands

  • The place name has appeared in several languages and forms over the centuries.
  • The Estonian name refers to the open, bare character of the landscape.
  • The present peninsula is partly the result of 20th-century land filling.

A layered landscape

  • Military and harbour history shaped the area.
  • Parts of the peninsula were closed to the public for decades.
  • Today the area combines industrial history with protected nature.
